Wool Quilting

A few weeks ago I took a beginners wool quilting class with Lisa Bongean at Primitive Gatherings Quilt shop. It was three hours of fun. There were four of us in the class—one lady travelling from Nebraska, a gift from her husband. Here is the penny rug that we made in the class.

I went with a friend that has only been quilting for about three years. I learned a Quilter’s Knot. She looked at me, “you didn’t know that?” No, I didn’t, everything I’d learned about quilting I had read and taught myself.

Lisa taught us about different kinds of wool, techniques on transferring your patterns to fabric pieces and showed us different kinds of perle cotton threads. The backing of the penny rug was a brush cotton.

I’d take the class weekly if I could. I really enjoyed myself.

In addition to the lesson material, Lisa shared her plans for quilt market, her plans for the shop in the coming year, and how she picks what to put in her shop.

I came home--- finished my class project--- and prepped by first solo wool project. While the photo doesn’t do it justice, it just seemed fitting to put it on a tree branch. It’s called ‘Nest’, from Lisa’s Summer Gatherings Book. Perfect to carry along or sit outside and work on.

I just stumbled on your blog. I love your penny rug and the nest is great! Wool is so fun to work with. Save all your scraps because you can use every tiny one of them in other wool projects.

I invite you to link up to my "Finished for Friday" post. It will be up in a few hours.

Ohhh Melllll! I wish I would have gotten your note earlier! I would have loved to attend this class with you. I am sad! I also purchased the "Nest" kit and can't wait to work on it. I am so glad you had a good time :o)

A class of four sounds nice and relaxed. I love the look of wool but too much handwork for me!

So very pretty.
And I love your coleus plants and the polka dot plant/pink splash - whatever it's called. I have a green and white one I've managed to save for a couple of years.
And the wool - I SOOO want to try some. All I've done is a little Bare Roots kit and it was great.
I have experimented with handquilting with wool batting gotten in a special deal at the Nashville quilt show and it was heavenly.
You do so many great things.

I love both your projects. It's so hot here I hesitated to even look at WOOL when I saw it in your headline, but these are small enough not to overwhelm, even in the South! Great saying on the little bird one. So true.

One of these days... I need to try to make a penny rug! I think it would be just perfect under my son's bowl of pinecones! His bowl also has a huge assortment of feathers sticking out at all angles - all very artistically placed of course! But seeing your pinecones on your lovely penny rug has me thinking! Glad you enjoyed your course - always fun to learn new things! Cheers! Evelyn
